In this post, I've put together a must see and do list while in Westport and Achill, Co. Mayo. From Foxford blankets to a cosy seaside Airbnb, full Irish breakfasts and scenic drives, these two destinations offered a holiday destination of dreams.
1. Treat yourself to an overnight stay in Knockranny House
A definite luxury, it is 100% worth treating oneself to an overnight stay in one of Knockranny's Hotel Suites. The rooms were simply stunning and like nothing I've ever before stayed in. I was only too happy to get the opportunity to stay in what wasn't only a room but what felt like an entire apartment with the most beautiful décor one could imagine. The breakfast is delicious and served in a room which provides a breathtaking view of Croagh Patrick and the Mayo landscape.
2. Stay in accommodation by the beach on Achill Island
During my stay, I spent some time in a beautiful Airbnb right by Keel beach. With towel in hand, we could stroll to the beach for a fresh dip, returning to hot showers in only 5 minutes. Morning walks on the beach and beyond on this beautiful island and cosy evenings' in right by the water were nothing short of spectacular. This is a holiday suitable for couples, friends and families alike.
3. Wander Westport on a Sunny Day
Westport is one of the most picturesque towns I've visited in Ireland to date. It boasts both culture and vibrancy and is the loveliest of places to get lost in on a sunny afternoon. Westport offers many beautiful restaurants, cute shops, and pubs alive with traditional Irish music – what's not to love?
4. Hire bikes and cycle some (or all) of the Greenway
This time, my stay was too short, but on my return trip, I am most definitely following in the footsteps (or should I say cycle path) of my cousin! For an inexpensive and most enjoyable day out, one can hire a bike for the day, cycle the Greenway and return their bike for collection on the other end. This is a lovely way of seeing the stunning scenery Co. Mayo has to offer on a leisurely cycle along this relatively flat cycle path. Of course, one can make the return journey on the bike for those of you who may be looking to clock up those extra cycling miles!
5. Climb Croagh Patrick
Although this time, I opted for enjoying the view of Croagh Patrick over breakfast in Knockranny House, on my return journey I will be sure to allocate a day for climbing Croagh Patrick. Seeing the stunning views on Co. Mayo while traveling from Westport to Achill Island, I can only imagine how spectacular it would be to see at 764 meters off the ground!
Sorry to have only had a short few days in Westport and Achill Island this time round, I left with definite must see and do's in addition to a little list to complete and tick off on return.
If you have any questions on perhaps details of where I stayed or indeed, anything else, feel free to get in touch!
Until next time,
